Untrusted search path vulnerability in the ThinkPadSensor::Startup function in Mozilla Firefox before 3.6.20, Thunderbird 3.x before 3.1.12, allows local users to gain privileges by leveraging write access in an unspecified directory to place a Trojan horse DLL that is loaded into the running Firefox process.

The weakness was disclosed 08/18/2011 by Rafael Gieschke (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as Bug 642469 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-2980. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1574 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55878 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (834591a9-c82f-11e0-897d-6c626dd55a41)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165573 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Mozilla Firefox (SUSE-SA:2011:037)).

Upgrading to version 1.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11640.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (55878). The entries 58320, 58319, 58318 and 58317 are pretty similar.
