Details
A vulnerability was found in rsyslog up to 5.4.0. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function parseLegacySyslogMsg. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the parseLegacySyslogMsg function in tools/syslogd.c in rsyslogd in rsyslog 4.6.x before 4.6.8 and 5.2.0 through 5.8.4 might allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application exit) via a long TAG in a legacy syslog message.
The weakness was shared 09/06/2011 with Red Hat as Bug 727644 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-3200. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75728 (openSUSE Security Update : rsyslog (openSUSE-SU-2011:1020-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155883 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for rsyslog (ELSA-2011-1247)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (69555), Tenable (75728), SecurityFocus (BID 49413†), SecurityTracker (ID 1026000†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-33160†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
