Scadatec Procyon SCADA up to 1.12 Coreservice.exe memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Scadatec Procyon SCADA up to 1.12 (SCADA Software). It has been rated as very critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the file Coreservice.exe. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Core Server HMI Service (Coreservice.exe) in Scadatec Limited Procyon SCADA 1.06, and other versions before 1.14, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a long password to the Telnet (TCP/23) port, which triggers an out-of-bounds read or write, leading to a stack-based buffer overflow.

The weakness was presented 09/15/2011 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at uscert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-3322 since 08/29/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 05/08/2017).

A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit in Ruby and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

Upgrading to version 1.13 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (69632) and Exploit-DB (17827).
