The weakness was published 07/25/2012 by Masato Kinugawa as HT5400 as confirmed knowledge base article (Apple Security Announce). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-0678 since 01/12/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 802925 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120376 (Apple Safari Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-07-25-1)).
Upgrading to version 6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
