Mozilla Firefox up to 6.0 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser). This issue affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

YARR, as used in Mozilla Firefox before 7.0, Thunderbird before 7.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.4, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted JavaScript.

The weakness was released 09/28/2011 by Aki Helin as Bug 653672 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-3232 since 08/19/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/20/2021). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56323 (FreeBSD : Mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (1fade8a3-e9e8-11e0-9580-4061862b8c22)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119622 (Mozilla Firefox, SeaMonkey, Thunderbird Multiple Vulnerabilities (MFSA-2011-36 through MFSA-2011-45)).

Upgrading to version 1.5 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (56323). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 58780, 58778, 58777 and 58776.
