Google Chrome before 21.0.1180.57 on Linux does not properly handle tabs, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was disclosed 07/31/2012 by Jeff Roberts (OUSPG) with Google Security Team as Stable Channel Release as not defined changelog entry (Website). The advisory is shared at googlechromereleases.blogspot.ch. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Google. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-2859 since 05/19/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/27/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62652 (GLSA-201210-07 : Chromium: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 21.0.1180.57 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
