Heap-based buffer overflow in the ecommunity_ecom2str function in bgp_ecommunity.c in bgpd in Quagga before 0.99.19 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code by sending a crafted BGP UPDATE message over IPv4.
The weakness was disclosed 10/10/2011 by Codenomicon with Codenomicon CROSS Project as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-3327. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62066 (CentOS 5 : quagga (CESA-2012:1258)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157411 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for quagga (ELSA-2017-0794)).
Upgrading to version 0.98.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
