The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was disclosed 10/11/2011 as MS11-081 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-1996. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1315 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56455 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100111 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS11-081)).
Applying the patch MS11-081 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11759.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (70130) and Tenable (56455). The entries 4423, 59002, 59001 and 59000 are pretty similar.
