Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 through 9 does not properly handle objects in memory, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an attempted access to a virtual function table after corruption of this table has occurred, aka "Virtual Function Table Corruption Remote Code Execution Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 10/11/2011 as MS11-081 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-2001. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56455 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100111 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS11-081)).
Applying the patch MS11-081 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11740.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (70129) and Tenable (56455). The entries 4423, 59001, 59000 and 58999 are pretty similar.
