MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.10.2 src/kdc/do_as_req.c finish_process_as_req Eingabe input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.10.2 (Network Authentication Software). It has been classified as very critical. This affects the function finish_process_as_req of the file src/kdc/do_as_req.c. The manipulation as part of a Eingabe leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The kdc_handle_protected_negotiation function in the Key Distribution Center (KDC) in MIT Kerberos 5 (aka krb5) 1.8.x, 1.9.x before 1.9.5, and 1.10.x before 1.10.3 attempts to calculate a checksum before verifying that the key type is appropriate for a checksum, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (uninitialized pointer free, heap memory corruption, and daemon crash) via a crafted AS-REQ request.

The weakness was released 07/31/2012 by Emmanuel Bouillon with NATO C3 Agency as MITKRB5-SA-2012-001 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at web.mit.edu. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-1015 since 02/07/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/27/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61970 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : krb5 (MDVSA-2012:120)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350633 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for krb5: ALAS-2012-114).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (77318) and Tenable (61970). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 5902 and 60915.
