A certain Red Hat script for sudo 1.7.2 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5 allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on the /var/tmp/nsswitch.conf.bak temporary file.

The weakness was presented 08/07/2012 with Red Hat as not defined advisory (Red Hat Security Advisory). It is possible to read the advisory at rhn.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-3440 since 06/14/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:var/tmp/nsswitch.conf.bak it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68595 (Oracle Linux 5 : sudo (ELSA-2012-1149)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216052 (VMWare ESX 4.0.0 Patch Release ESX400-201305001 Missing (KB2044240)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
