Cisco Unified Communications Manager up to 5.1%282%29 path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Cisco Unified Communications Manager up to 5.1%282%29 (Unified Communication Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM) 5.x and 6.x before 6.1(5)SU2, 7.x before 7.1(5b)SU2, and 8.x before 8.0(3), and Cisco Unified Contact Center Express (aka Unified CCX or UCCX) and Cisco Unified IP Interactive Voice Response (Unified IP-IVR) before 6.0(1)SR1ES8, 7.0(x) before 7.0(2)ES1, 8.0(x) through 8.0(2)SU3, and 8.5(x) before 8.5(1)SU2, allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a crafted URL, aka Bug IDs CSCth09343 and CSCts44049.

The weakness was published 10/27/2011 as cisco-sa-20111026-uccx as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-3315. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43430 (Cisco Unified Communications Manager Directory Traversal Vulnerability (cisco-sa-20111026-cucm)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (70971), Exploit-DB (36256), SecurityFocus (BID 50372†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-33916†).
