A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Openswan 2.6.29 through 2.6.35 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and pluto IKE daemon crash) via an ISAKMP message with an invalid KEY_LENGTH attribute, which is not properly handled by the error handling function.
The weakness was disclosed 11/17/2011 by Paul (Website). The advisory is shared at openswan.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-3380. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
