FreeBSD 8.1 openpam_configure.c pam_start service_name path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD 8.1 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function pam_start of the file openpam_configure.c. The manipulation of the argument service_name with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in openpam_configure.c in OpenPAM before r478 on FreeBSD 8.1 allows local users to load arbitrary DSOs and gain privileges via a .. (dot dot) in the service_name argument to the pam_start function, as demonstrated by a .. in the -c option to kcheckpass.

The weakness was disclosed 11/17/2011 (Website). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-4122 since 10/18/2011. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

A public exploit has been developed in Perl. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57740 (FreeBSD : FreeBSD -- pam_ssh() does not validate service names (e51d5b1a-4638-11e1-9f47-00e0815b8da8)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 8.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (71205) and Tenable (57740). The entry 59892 is pretty similar.
