The weakness was released 08/14/2012 by Honggang Ren (suto) with Fortiguard Labs as confirmed bulletin (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at adobe.com. The public release was coordinated with Adobe. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-2046 since 04/02/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61536 (Shockwave Player <= 11.6.5.635 Multiple Memory Corruption Vulnerabilities (APSB12-17)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120409 (Adobe Shockwave Player Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB12-17)).

Upgrading to version 11.6.6.636 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at get.adobe.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
