A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Publisher 2003/2007 (Image Processing Software) and classified as very critical. Affected by this issue is the function "Publisher. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Microsoft Publisher 2003 SP3, and 2007 SP2 and SP3, does not properly manage memory allocations for function pointers, which allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Publisher file, aka "Publisher Function Pointer Overwrite Vulnerability."

The weakness was released 12/13/2011 as MS11-091 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-1508 since 03/23/2011. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/28/2021). This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57277 (MS11-091: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Publisher Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2607702)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110161 (Microsoft Office Publisher Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS11-091)).

Applying the patch MS11-091 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12179.
