imap/nntpd.c in the NNTP server (nntpd) for Cyrus IMAPd 2.4.x before 2.4.12 allows remote attackers to bypass authentication by sending an AUTHINFO USER command without sending an additional AUTHINFO PASS command.

The weakness was disclosed 12/24/2011 as Bug 740822 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-3372. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75459 (openSUSE Security Update : cyrus-imapd (openSUSE-SU-2011:1170-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350720 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for cyrus-imapd: ALAS-2011-027).

Upgrading to version 2.4.11 eliminates this vulnerability.
