family_feedbag.c in the oscar protocol plugin in libpurple in Pidgin before 2.10.1 does not perform the expected UTF-8 validation on message data, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted (1) AIM or (2) ICQ message associated with buddy-list addition.
The weakness was disclosed 12/24/2011 (Website). The advisory is available at hermes.opensuse.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-4601 since 11/29/2011. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68409 (Oracle Linux 6 : pidgin (ELSA-2011-1821)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120535 (Solaris Multiple Vulnerabilities in Pidgin).
Upgrading to version 2.5.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
