A vulnerability was found in IBM Lotus Domino up to 8.5.3 (Groupware Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the file /help/lccon.nsf/ of the component WebMail UI/Domino Help. The manipulation of the argument Src

Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in IBM Lotus Domino 7.x and 8.x before 8.5.4 allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via (1) a URL accessed during use of the Mail template in the WebMail UI or (2) a URL accessed during use of Domino Help through the Domino HTTP server.
The bug was discovered 03/01/2008. The weakness was presented 08/15/2012 by Eugene Dokukin (MustLive) as Reference #1608160 as confirmed bulletin (IBM Knowledge Base). It is possible to read the advisory at www-01.ibm.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with IBM. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-3302 since 06/07/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
After 2 weeks, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1628 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 74258 (IBM Lotus Domino HTTP Response Splitting and Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 8.5.4 eliminates this vulnerability. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting DominoValidateFramesetSRC=1
. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
