IBM Lotus Domino up to 8.5.3 HTTP Server input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in IBM Lotus Domino up to 8.5.3 (Groupware Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component HTTP Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple CRLF injection vulnerabilities in the HTTP server in IBM Lotus Domino 8.5.x before 8.5.4 allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary HTTP headers and conduct HTTP response splitting attacks via crafted input involving (1) Mozilla Firefox 3.0.9 and earlier or (2) unspecified browsers.

The weakness was shared 08/15/2012 by Eugene Dokukin (MustLive) as Reference #1608160 as confirmed bulletin (IBM Knowledge Base). The advisory is shared for download at www-01.ibm.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-3301 since 06/07/2012. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.

It is declared as highly functional. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 74258 (IBM Lotus Domino HTTP Response Splitting and Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 8.5.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (77400). The entry 5983 is related to this item.
