A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been classified as problematic. epan/dissectors/packet-afp.c in the AFP dissector in Wireshark 1.4.x before 1.4.15, 1.6.x before 1.6.10, and 1.8.x before 1.8.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (loop and CPU consumption) via a large number of ACL entries.
The weakness was published 08/15/2012 by Stefan Cornelius as wnpa-sec-2012-17 as confirmed bulletin (Website) via wireshark.org. The advisory is shared for download at wireshark.org. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-4289 since 08/14/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack can only be done within the local network. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71268 (Amazon Linux AMI : wireshark (ALAS-2013-251)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350493 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for wireshark: ALAS-2013-251).
Upgrading to version 1.4.15, 1.6.10 or 1.8.2 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at anonsvn.wireshark.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
