Address Book in Apple Mac OS X before 10.7.3 automatically switches to unencrypted sessions upon failure of encrypted connections, which allows remote attackers to read CardDAV data by terminating an encrypted connection and then sniffing the network.
The weakness was disclosed 02/02/2012 with Oracle as HT5130 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-3444 since 09/13/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57797 (Mac OS X 10.7.x < 10.7.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (BEAST)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119919 (Apple Mac OS X Lion v10.7.3 and Security Update 2012-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2012-02-01-1)).
Upgrading to version 10.7.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
