Off-by-one error in QuickTime in Apple Mac OS X before 10.7.3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted rdrf atom in a movie file that triggers a buffer overflow.
The weakness was released 02/02/2012 as HT5261 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-3459 since 09/13/2011. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57797 (Mac OS X 10.7.x < 10.7.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (BEAST)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120221 (Apple QuickTime Prior to 7.7.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-05-15-1)).
Upgrading to version 10.6.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12408.
