OpenEMR 4.1.0 formname path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in OpenEMR 4.1.0 (Business Process Management Software). This issue affects an unknown code. The manipulation of the argument formname with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in OpenEMR 4.1.0 allow remote authenticated users to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the formname parameter to (1) contrib/acog/print_form.php; or (2) load_form.php, (3) view_form.php, or (4) trend_form.php in interface/patient_file/encounter.

The weakness was presented 02/07/2012 by High-Tech Bridge SA with High-Tech Bridge SA (Website). The advisory is shared at htbridge.ch. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0991 since 02/02/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (72914). See 60114, 62193, 113065 and 113066 for similar entries.
