RealNetworks RealPlayer up to 14.0.7 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in RealNetworks RealPlayer (Multimedia Player Software). It has been classified as very critical. Affected is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The ATRAC codec in RealNetworks RealPlayer 11.x and 14.x through 14.0.7, RealPlayer SP 1.0 through 1.1.5, and Mac RealPlayer 12.x before 12.0.0.1703 does not properly decode samples, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted ATRAC audio file.

The weakness was shared 02/08/2012 by Andrzej Dyjak (Website). The advisory is shared for download at service.real.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-0928 since 01/27/2012. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 11/29/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57863 (RealPlayer for Windows < 15.0.2.71 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119968 (RealPlayer Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (73024) and Tenable (57863). The entries 60143, 60142, 60141 and 60140 are related to this item.
