Untrusted search path vulnerability in facebook_plugin.fpi in the Facebook plug-in in Foxit Reader 5.3.1.0606 allows local users to gain privileges via a Trojan horse dwmapi.dll file in the current working directory, as demonstrated by a directory that contains a .pdf file. NOTE: some of these details are obtained from third party information.

The weakness was released 08/23/2012 by Kaveh Ghaemmaghami (coolkaveh) as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared for download at archives.neohapsis.com. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-4759 since 09/06/2012. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1574.

A public exploit has been developed by Kaveh Ghaemmaghami (coolkaveh) in C++ and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at archives.neohapsis.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62064 (Foxit Reader < 5.4 Trojan DLL Injection), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
