Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 does not properly handle objects in memory, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by accessing a deleted object, aka "VML Remote Code Execution Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/16/2010. The weakness was published 02/14/2012 (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-0155. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 700 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57944 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100115 (Microsoft Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS12-010)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12065.
