A vulnerability has been found in Movabletype Movable Type Enterprise up to 4.1 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component Default Configuration. The manipulation of the argument file=
with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
The default configuration of Movable Type before 4.38, 5.0x before 5.07, and 5.1x before 5.13 supports the "mt:Include file=" attribute, which allows remote authenticated users to conduct directory traversal attacks and read arbitrary files by leveraging the template-designer role.
The weakness was presented 03/02/2012 (Website). The advisory is available at movabletype.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-1497 since 03/02/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy.
