The weakness was presented 08/28/2012 by Gary Kwong, Christian Holler, Jesse Ruderman, John Schoenick, Vladimir Vukicevic and Daniel Holbert as mfsa2012-57 as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-1970 since 03/30/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68608 (Oracle Linux 6 : thunderbird (ELSA-2012-1211)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120453 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2012:1210)).
Upgrading to version 15 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
