Mozilla Firefox 14 BMP Height Header ICO Image File memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 14 (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component BMP Height Header Handler. The manipulation as part of a ICO Image File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Mozilla Firefox before 15.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.7, Thunderbird before 15.0, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.7, and SeaMonkey before 2.12 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a negative height value in a BMP image within a .ICO file, related to (1) improper handling of the transparency bitmask by the nsICODecoder component and (2) improper processing of the alpha channel by the nsBMPDecoder component.

The weakness was published 08/28/2012 by Frederic Hoguin as MFSA2012-61 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The public release has been coordinated with Mozilla. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-3966 since 07/11/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61721 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox (CESA-2012:1210)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120453 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2012:1210)). When processing a negative "height" header value for the bitmap image, a memory corruption can be induced, allowing an attacker to write random memory and cause a crash. This crash may be potentially exploitable.

Upgrading to version 15 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (61721). Similar entries are available at 6036, 6035, 6039 and 6040.
