The BGP implementation in bgpd in Quagga before 0.99.20.1 does not properly use message buffers for OPEN messages, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and daemon exit) via a message associated with a malformed Four-octet AS Number Capability (aka AS4 capability).
The weakness was disclosed 04/05/2012 with Mu Dynamics as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0255 since 12/21/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62081 (CentOS 6 : quagga (CESA-2012:1259)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157411 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for quagga (ELSA-2017-0794)).
Upgrading to version 0.98.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
