The ssh_gssapi_parse_ename function in gss-serv.c in OpenSSH 5.8 and earlier, when gssapi-with-mic authentication is enabled, allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a large value in a certain length field. NOTE: there may be limited scenarios in which this issue is relevant.

The weakness was presented 04/05/2012 by Adam Zabrocki (Website). The advisory is available at site.pi3.com.pl. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-5000 since 12/24/2011. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The successful exploitation needs a authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/01/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68558 (Oracle Linux 6 : openssh (ELSA-2012-0884)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165457 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for openssh (SUSE-SU-2012:1045-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
