Wireshark 1.4.x before 1.4.11 and 1.6.x before 1.6.5 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a long packet in a (1) Accellent 5Views (aka .5vw) file, (2) I4B trace file, or (3) NETMON 2 capture file.
The weakness was disclosed 04/11/2012 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-0066 since 12/07/2011. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58849 (CentOS 6 : wireshark (CESA-2012:0509)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120898 (Solaris 11 Support Repository Update (SRU) 4 Missing).
Upgrading to version 1.6.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
