Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird 14 XSLT Format-Number Feature information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 14 (Web Browser). Affected is an unknown code block of the component XSLT Format-Number Feature. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

The format-number functionality in the XSLT implementation in Mozilla Firefox before 15.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.7, Thunderbird before 15.0, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.7, and SeaMonkey before 2.12 allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information via unspecified vectors that trigger a heap-based buffer over-read.

The weakness was published 08/28/2012 by Nicolas Grégoire (vsemozhetbyt) as MFSA 2012-65 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-3972 since 07/11/2012. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592. Security research Nicolas Grégoire used the Address Sanitizer tool to discover an out-of-bounds read in the format-number feature of XSLT, which can cause inaccurate formatting of numbers and information leakage.

After 7 months, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61721 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox (CESA-2012:1210)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 15 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (61721). Further details are available at bugzilla.mozilla.org. Similar entries are available at 6036, 6035, 6039 and 6040.
