A vulnerability was found in Intuit QuickBooks 2009/2010/2011/2012. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function in the library HelpAsyncPluggableProtocol.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Absolute path traversal vulnerability in the intu-help-qb (aka Intuit Help System Async Pluggable Protocol) handlers in HelpAsyncPluggableProtocol.dll in Intuit QuickBooks 2009 through 2012, when Internet Explorer is used, might allow remote attackers to read arbitrary files in ZIP archives via a full pathname in the URI.
The weakness was released 04/25/2012 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-2421 since 04/25/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
