EMC Documentum Information Rights Management up to 3 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in EMC Documentum Information Rights Management up to 3 (Content Management System). This affects an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The IRM Server in EMC Documentum Information Rights Management 4.x before 4.7.0100 and 5.x before 5.0.1030 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and daemon crash) via input data that (1) lacks FIPS fields or (2) has an invalid version number.

The weakness was published 05/14/2012 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-2276 since 04/19/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Luigi Auriemma and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 32 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

Upgrading to version 4 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (75553) and Exploit-DB (18734). Similar entry is available at 60736.
