The weakness was released 08/30/2012 by Fermin Serna (miaubiz) with Google Security Team as stable-channel-update_30 as not defined blog post (Website). The advisory is shared for download at googlechromereleases.blogspot.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-2869 since 05/19/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 04/16/2017). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 802451 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165389 (SUSE Security Update for Chromium: Update to 21.0.1180.88 (openSUSE-SU-2012:1215-1)).

Upgrading to version 21.0.1180.89 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
