A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Google Chrome 21.0.1180.83 (Web Browser). This issue affects the function xsltCompileLocationPathPattern/xsltGenerateIdFunction in the library libxslt of the file pattern.c/functions.c of the component Xpath Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

libxslt 1.1.26 and earlier, as used in Google Chrome before 21.0.1180.89, does not properly manage memory, which might allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted XSLT expression that is not properly identified during XPath navigation, related to (1) the xsltCompileLocationPathPattern function in libxslt/pattern.c and (2) the xsltGenerateIdFunction function in libxslt/functions.c.

The weakness was disclosed 08/30/2012 by Nicholas Gregoire (miaubiz) with Google Security Team as stable-channel-update_30 as confirmed blog post (Website). The advisory is shared at googlechromereleases.blogspot.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Google. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-2870 since 05/19/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71907 (GLSA-201401-07 : libxslt: Denial of Service), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216049 (VMWare ESXi 5.1.0 Patch Complete Update 1 Missing (KB2041632)).

Upgrading to version 21.0.1180.89 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (71907). The entries 4619, 4675, 4996 and 5407 are pretty similar.
