A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Puppetlabs Puppet Enterprise Users up to 2.0.1 (Service Management Software). This affects the function Puppet::FileBucket::File
of the component Filesystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
Unspecified vulnerability in Puppet 2.6.x before 2.6.15 and 2.7.x before 2.7.13, and Puppet Enterprise (PE) Users 1.0, 1.1, 1.2.x, 2.0.x, and 2.5.x before 2.5.1 allows remote authenticated users with agent SSL keys to (1) cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a REST request to a stream that triggers a thread block, as demonstrated using CVE-2012-1986 and /dev/random; or (2) cause a denial of service (filesystem consumption) via crafted REST requests that use "a marshaled form of a Puppet::FileBucket::File object" to write to arbitrary file locations.
The weakness was disclosed 05/29/2012 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at hermes.opensuse.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-1987 since 04/02/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. A authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58753 (Debian DSA-2451-1 : puppet - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165493 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Puppet (SUSE-SU-2012:0771-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (74795) and Tenable (58753). The entries 61128, 60868, 60866 and 60865 are pretty similar.
