ImageMagick up to 6.5.3-5 numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-189. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple integer overflows in (1) magick/profile.c or (2) magick/property.c in ImageMagick 6.7.5 and earlier allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption) and possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted offset value in the ResolutionUnit tag in the EXIF IFD0 of an image. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2012-0247.

The weakness was published 06/05/2012 by Aleksis Kauppinen as Bug CVE-201 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-1185 since 02/14/2012. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 12/03/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74052 (GLSA-201405-09 : ImageMagick: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165490 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for ImageMagick (SUSE-SU-2012:0763-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12209.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (76140) and Tenable (74052). Similar entries are available at 13218, 67522, 56096 and 56006.
