MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.10.1 svr_principal.c check_1_6_dummy null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.10.1 (Network Authentication Software). This affects the function check_1_6_dummy in the library lib/kadm5/srv/svr_principal.c of the component Kerberos. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The check_1_6_dummy function in lib/kadm5/srv/svr_principal.c in kadmind in MIT Kerberos 5 (aka krb5) 1.8.x, 1.9.x, and 1.10.x before 1.10.2 allows remote authenticated administrators to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and daemon crash) via a KRB5_KDB_DISALLOW_ALL_TIX create request that lacks a password.

The weakness was published 06/07/2012 (GitHub Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-1013 since 02/07/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. The successful exploitation needs a authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68589 (Oracle Linux 6 : krb5 (ELSA-2012-1131)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350633 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for krb5: ALAS-2012-114).

Upgrading to version 5-1.8 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (76058) and Tenable (68589). Similar entry is available at 5901.
