Integer overflow in the i915_gem_do_execbuffer function in drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915_gem_execbuffer.c in the Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) subsystem in the Linux kernel before 3.3.5 on 32-bit platforms allows local users to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds write) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted ioctl call.

The weakness was released 06/13/2012 by Xi Wang (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-2384 since 04/19/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69623 (Amazon Linux AMI : kernel (ALAS-2012-133)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165525 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2012:0904-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.
