A vulnerability was found in Digia Qt and classified as very critical. This issue affects the function Lookup_MarkMarkPos
of the file harfbuzz-gpos.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the Lookup_MarkMarkPos function in the HarfBuzz module (harfbuzz-gpos.c), as used by Qt before 4.7.4 and Pango, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted font file.
The weakness was shared 06/15/2012 by Josh Bressers as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at cgit.freedesktop.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-3193 since 08/19/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/03/2021).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75609 (openSUSE Security Update : libQtWebKit-devel (openSUSE-SU-2011:1119-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119653 (CentOS Security Update for Qt 4 (CESA-2011:1324)).
Upgrading to version 4.5.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.freedesktop.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (69991), Tenable (75609), SecurityFocus (BID 49723†), OSVDB (75652†) and Secunia (SA41537†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
