MediaWiki 1.18.4/1.19.1 User Block Attempt information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in MediaWiki 1.18.4/1.19.1 (Content Management System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code of the component User Block Attempt Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

MediaWiki before 1.18.5, and 1.19.x before 1.19.2 does not properly protect user block metadata, which allows remote administrators to read a user block reason via a reblock attempt.

The weakness was released 08/31/2012 by Tim Starling (Fomafix) with MediaWiki as Bug 39823 as not defined posting (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.wikimedia.org. The public release was coordinated with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-4382 since 08/21/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue. During internal review, it was discovered that metadata about blocks, hidden by a user with suppression rights, was visible to administrators.

A public exploit has been developed by Tim Starling and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at bugzilla.wikimedia.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61765 (FreeBSD : mediawiki -- multiple vulnerabilities (7c0fecd6-f42f-11e1-b17b-000c2977ec30)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 1.18.5 or 1.19.2 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at download.wikimedia.org. Applying the patch Patch for 1.18 branch 11042 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at bugzilla.wikimedia.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Administrators are advised to avoid placing private data in block reasons. If a block reason does contain private data, the user should be reblocked with a non-private block reason and the original log entry suppressed.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (61765). openwall.com is providing further details. Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 6086, 6088, 6097 and 6098.
