Use-after-free vulnerability in dns.c in Tor before 0.2.2.38 might allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via vectors related to failed DNS requests.

The weakness was disclosed 07/31/2012 by Jan Lieskovsky (arma) as Bug 849949 as not defined posting (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-3517 since 06/14/2012. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74733 (openSUSE Security Update : tor (openSUSE-SU-2012:1068-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks.
