A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.38.8 (Operating System). Affected is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The ROSE protocol implementation in the Linux kernel before 2.6.39 does not verify that certain data-length values are consistent with the amount of data sent, which might allow remote attackers to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory or cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) via crafted data to a ROSE socket.
The issue has been introduced in 03/14/2011. The weakness was shared 06/21/2012 (Website). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-4914 since 12/23/2011. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/05/2021).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 465 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57583 (Debian DSA-2389-1 : linux-2.6 - privilege escalation/denial of service/information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (57583). The entries 4416, 4544, 61073 and 61071 are related to this item.
