The manipulation of the argument MEMF_populate_on_demand with an unknown input leads to a config vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-16. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

XENMEM_populate_physmap in Xen 4.0, 4.1, and 4.2, and Citrix XenServer 6.0.2 and earlier, when translating paging mode is not used, allows local PV OS guest kernels to cause a denial of service (BUG triggered and host crash) via invalid flags such as MEMF_populate_on_demand.

The weakness was disclosed 09/05/2012 by Matthew Daley as 2012-09/msg00002 as confirmed posting (Maillist). The advisory is shared for download at lists.xen.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-3496 since 06/14/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.004.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62015 (Debian DSA-2544-1 : xen - denial of service), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370049 (Citrix XenServer Security Update (CTX134708)).

Applying the patch xsa14 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at lists.xen.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (78267) and Tenable (62015). The entries 5876, 5927, 6105 and 6107 are pretty similar.
