Google Chrome up to 20.0.1132.28 Subsystem input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Google Chrome up to 20.0.1132.28 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The texSubImage2D implementation in the WebGL subsystem in Google Chrome before 20.0.1132.43 does not properly handle uploads to floating-point textures, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted web page, as demonstrated by certain WebGL performance tests, aka rdar problem 11520387.

The weakness was disclosed 06/27/2012 by Dharani Govindan (Inferno) with Chromium Development Community (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at hermes.opensuse.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-2819 since 05/19/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/05/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59750 (FreeBSD : chromium -- multiple vulnerabilities (ff922811-c096-11e1-b0f4-00262d5ed8ee)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120297 (Google Chrome Prior to 20.0.1132.43 Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 20.0.1132.29 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (76556) and Tenable (59750). The entries 5585, 5586, 5587 and 5588 are pretty similar.
