The make_clickable function in wp-includes/formatting.php in WordPress before 3.1.1 does not properly check URLs before passing them to the PCRE library, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a comment with a crafted URL that triggers many recursive calls.
The weakness was released 06/27/2012 (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-4957. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 1.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
