Shlomi Fish Config-inifiles 2.70 ini Config::IniFiles symlink

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Shlomi Fish Config-inifiles 2.70 and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function Config::IniFiles of the file ini. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The Config::IniFiles module before 2.71 for Perl creates temporary files with predictable names, which allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack. NOTE: some of these details are obtained from third party information. NOTE: it has been reported that this might only be exploitable by writing in the same directory as the .ini file. If this is the case, then this issue might not cross privilege boundaries.

The weakness was presented 06/27/2012 (Website). The advisory is shared at bitbucket.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-2451 since 05/02/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59271 (Fedora 17 : perl-Config-IniFiles-2.72-1.fc17 (2012-7763)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 2.70 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (75328) and Tenable (59271).
